How Do You Do It?

How Do You Do It?

Gerry and The Pacemakers hailed from Liverpool and were managed by Brian Epstein. But that wasn’t the only two things they had in common with The Beatles. Both groups took a crack at “How Do You Do It?” in the early sixties.

The Beatles passed on releasing this song to the public though and this paved the way for Gerry Marsden and the boys to have a massive hit (#1 on the UK charts for three weeks, #9 on the US charts) in the Summer of ’64. The Beatles’ version remained unreleased until the ’90s. Hear the John Lennon-led Beatles’ version, corny ooh-la-la’s and all, here.

Produced by George Martin (yet another thing in common with the Fab Four), this song had a strong Mersey beat, which was all the rage in 1964, fuelling the British Invasion. It’s tight. It’s poppy and it’s fun! Check out this live video from a performance in Sweden…
